Paycheck Protection Program

The Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) authorizes up to $349 billion in forgivable loans to small businesses to pay their employees during the COVID-19 crisis.

  • Starting April 3, 2020, small businesses and sole proprietorships can apply for and receive loans to cover their payroll and other certain expenses through existing SBA lenders.
  • Starting April 10, 2020, independent contractors and self-employed individuals can apply for and receive loans to cover their payroll and other certain expenses through existing SBA lenders.

Other regulated lenders will be available to make these loans as soon as they are approved and enrolled in the program.

AgeWell Services Extends Plans for Senior Curbside Meal Distribution Amid COVID-19 Crisis

 

MUSKEGON, Mich. – AgeWell Services of West Michigan and Grand Rapids YMCA’s Veggie Van continue to provide Senior Curbside Meal Distribution During COVID-19 Outbreak with support from Senior Resources and Muskegon County Senior Millage.

 

AgeWell Services of West Michigan and Grand Rapids YMCA’s Veggie Van are continuing their work together along with various community partner locations to provide meals to seniors aged 60 and over in Muskegon and Ottawa Counties. Various dates and locations from April 7 through April 17 from 12:00 to 2:00 pm.

 

Meals will be served to adults 60 and over in Muskegon and Ottawa Counties. Meals will be available for curbside pickup at various locations. The curbside pickup offers a quick, drive-through option to keep seniors and volunteers safely separated during the COVID-19 outbreak. Seniors that cannot drive or get out of the house can send someone to “proxy” for their meal.

Lakeshore Museum Center Offers Family-Friendly Resources for At-Home Educational Fun

MUSKEGON, MI – As communities continue to comply with staying safe at home, families everywhere cite an increasing need for at-home activities that provide both entertainment and education. Lakeshore Museum Center has addressed this growing need by making many resources available for family members of all ages.

“This is definitely a difficult time,” stated Jackie Huss, Program Manager at the museum. “But while we may not be able to offer our traditional programming, we are continuing to find ways to serve and support the community.”

From the comfort and safety of home, patrons can enjoy a virtual historic visit by browsing and viewing the museum’s collection at //lakeshoremuseum.org/our-collection. In addition, the museum has made it easy to find an activity for each member of the family, all in one place.

“We have created a page on our website dedicated to fun and educational resources and activities that can be done at-home,” shared Huss. “Just like at the museum, there’s something for everyone!”

From science and other videos to podcasts and downloadable activity booklets, links to crafts for young kids, the mini mastodon scavenger hunt map and more, multiple resources are waiting to be discovered and enjoyed, all made available by the museum, free of charge.

Families are encouraged to check the webpage often as the museum is continually updating it with new information and fun ideas. Adults can also join in by sharing their experiences during this difficult time to be submitted in a social diary for the museum archives.

Said Huss, “Just because we are all having to stay at home, doesn’t mean we can’t still learn and have fun.”

District Health Department #10 continues to warn of Scams relating to CoVID-19

 

March 31, 2020 – District Health Department #10 (DHD#10) is urging residents to again be wary of scams related to the COVID-19 pandemic happening throughout the country.

Earlier this month, DHD#10 reported scammers attempting to sell fake products and calling individuals posing as health officials and providing false information on testing and treatments.

Scammers are now claiming to be from local health departments and offering medication and at home COVID-19 tests, meanwhile asking for Medicaid and Medicare numbers to bill.

“Please, please, please, verify that the person you are talking to is who they say they are before giving out any kind of personal information over the phone,” said Jeannine Taylor, Public Health Information Officer for DHD#10. “Continue to be cautious when answering calls, texts, emails and social media messages.”

If an individual believes they are the target of a scam, they may file a scam complaint with the Attorney General’s office. The Attorney General’s Consumer Protection webpage is available as a resource as well as the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Team at 877-765-8388.

HealthWest to offer free virtual groups to support mental wellbeing during governor’s stay-at-home order 24-Hour Mental Health Crisis Line: 231-722-HELP (4357)

HealthWest will begin hosting free daily virtual groups to help individuals stay connected and healthy during the governor’s stay-at-home order.
Individuals in services at HealthWest and the general public will be able to participate in these daily online groups, which will promote mental wellbeing and support those living with substance use issues, beginning Wednesday, April 1.

“Social isolation can impact your mental health and lead some individuals to cope through use of drugs and alcohol,” said HealthWest Executive Director Julia Rupp. “These groups will help people stay connected and encourage healthy habits during this crisis.”

Groups will include Smart Recovery substance use recovery meetings, daily talk sessions where individuals can connect directly with mental health professionals, discussions on skills to help cope with the stress and anxiety related to the COVID-19 crisis, and fun activities to allow participants to engage with others.

“Many people in our community live by themselves, including some of those we serve at HealthWest,” said Rupp. “We want to make sure they know that they are not alone even when they are physically isolated.”

HealthWest serves as a vital part of Muskegon County’s public health safety net and is responsible for promoting mental wellbeing throughout the community.

Former MCC Students May be Eligible for Debt Forgiveness Program

 

Former Muskegon Community College students, who have financial holds up to $1,200 with MCC and who have not been enrolled at MCC for three academic years, are being encouraged to re-enroll under an initiative called the MCC Debt Forgiveness Program.

 

Qualified students may be eligible to have their debt forgiven. In addition to the above requirements, students must also possess and maintain a 2.0 GPA and commit to ongoing support services designed to help them achieve their academic goals.

 

“The main goal of this debt forgiveness initiative is to get former MCC students, who have left because of a debt owed to the college, to return so that they can graduate with a credential,” added MCC Provost/Executive Vice President John Selmon.

 

Eligible students for the MCC Debt Forgiveness Program, once approved, must sign a contract for reenrollment and maintain a 2.0 GPA. Students must have a completed FAFSA on file and a means to pay current charges. They will be required to participate in a program geared to provide a wide range of support services.  Students who agree to this contract and fulfill it will have their past due balance reduced incrementally over three semesters.

 

To apply for the MCC Debt Forgiveness Program, one must complete and submit the online application form available at www.muskegoncc.edu/debtforgiveness. The application submission does not guarantee acceptance into the MCC Debt Forgiveness Program. The MCC Care Team will review the request and contact the applicant.

 

 

New Filing Schedule

The new system uses alphabetical order to manage web visits and calls. It is being implemented as UIA has moved nearly all of its staff members to customer service positions in order to faster assist Michiganders in filing for benefits. At the same time, the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget is working to expand capacity and infrastructure of the State’s online systems. Potential benefit recipients can help alleviate the system overload by following a few simple steps:

  • If you have a computer and the internet, please use the website, not the phone system, to apply for benefits: Michigan.gov/UIA.
  • Log onto the website during off-hours for better access – late at night or very early in the morning.
  • Please be patient. If the page is loading slowly, DO NOT refresh. Give it a few minutes to load.
  • View the online tool kit and frequently asked questions before you apply to ensure that you have the appropriate information and documents you will need on hand.
  • If you must use the Call Center, please observe the alphabetical system outlined below beginning this Sunday to help ease the burden.

When you file will NOT affect whether you are approved for benefits or the amount of payment. You will be compensated from the date you were laid-off or released from your employment. You have 28 days from your last day of work to apply for benefits.  UIA understands the urgency that benefit recipients are experiencing, but the fastest way to secure benefits is to follow the UIA guidelines.

The current situation is unprecedented, and UIA is doing everything in its power to ensure that those who are eligible for benefits receive them. Our team is working as quickly as possible to process applications and approve benefits. Your assistance is essential to maximizing our efficiency as we work to help all Michiganders get the financial support they have earned.

Applications for the Michigan Small Business Relief Program are now open. The MEDC received Michigan Strategic Fund Board approval last week for a $20 million program statewide.
